During the Great Cleanup, the Zund Canal in Riga is planned to be cleared of historical pollution, the LETA agency was informed by the "Vesela jūra" society.
The cleaning of the canal is organized by the "Vesela jūra" society in collaboration with the Kipsala neighborhood society. The organizers aim to free the waters of Riga from historical pollution and are calling on certified divers to participate in a cleanup event to collectively clear the bottom of the canal from decades of accumulated trash.
The Zund Canal is a historical water artery of the Daugava River, which has over time become a "dump" for various types of waste: from household items to hazardous scrap metal and so-called ghost nets, which are particularly dangerous for fish and birds, and also break down into microplastics that then enter the Baltic Sea.
"The waste that enters the canal not only spoils the landscape but also slowly poisons the water and threatens the local ecosystem. We as divers have unique skills to access areas that are unavailable to the average participant in the cleanup. Every item lifted from the bottom will contribute to the health of our city and the Baltic Sea," emphasizes Valters Preimanis, a representative of the "Vesela jūra" society.
