The former prime minister urges the government to act more actively and decisively.
Former Prime Minister Andris Berzins noted in a discussion on TV-24 that due to the rising cost of petroleum products, food prices will also increase. What to do? "In principle, what the government is already doing is necessary - it is essential to reduce the excise tax on fuel, and even more decisively. And perhaps it is worth reducing VAT," the veteran of Latvian politics stated. He also emphasized that since 5% of GDP is spent on defense, the social sector - education, social services, healthcare - "will constantly be under pressure and the government will not have special tools." In other words, the government will not have "extra" funds for medicine, social services, and education. The only way out is to take loans again. "But fiscal discipline must also be maintained!" the former prime minister said.
