April 19, 2026, is a very important holiday that is always celebrated on the Sunday one week after Easter, and therefore has a floating date.
This day is called Antipascha or Red Hill. On this day, the Apostle Thomas is remembered.
What is Remembered in the Church on April 19, 2026
The event commemorated in the church on this day occurred on the eighth day after the resurrection of Jesus, thus it always symbolically takes place on the following Sunday after Easter. It is described in the Gospel of John.
The apostles were personally present the previous Sunday when Christ rose from the dead. Only one apostle, Thomas, was not in Jerusalem that day and therefore did not witness the miracle personally. Being a meticulous person, he did not want to take his friends' word for it and declared that he would only believe if he personally placed his fingers in the wounds of the risen teacher.
And so, when all 12 apostles gathered together for a meal, the Savior appeared to them. He invited Thomas to touch his wounds on his hands and feet. Thomas was astonished and believed, and he began to glorify the resurrection of the Lord along with everyone else. This event, by the way, is the basis for the phrase "Doubting Thomas."
The Meaning of the Holiday
This day reminds us of the necessity of unconditional faith that does not require any proof from the Lord. They will come into our lives on their own.
Traditions of Worship
From this day onward and for all subsequent days until the end of Easter (which occurs 39 days after the holiday), the services retain Easter elements. The liturgy begins and ends with the singing of "Christ is Risen." Additionally, "Christ is Risen" is sung after the communion of the laity instead of the usual hymn "We have seen the true light."
