Birth Rate Declines, Mortality Rises: Alarming Figures at the Start of the Year

In Latvia, 1761 newborns were registered in the first two months of this year, which is a decrease of 0.6%, or ten less than in the same period of 2025, according to preliminary data published by the Central Statistical Bureau, reports LETA.

In the first two months of 2026, among the registered newborns, there were 875 boys, which is a decrease of 4.9%, or 45 less than the previous year, and 886 girls, which is an increase of 4.1%, or 35 more.

In February, 810 newborns were registered in Latvia, which is 9%, or 80 less than in the same month of 2025, including 407 boys and 403 girls.

In the first two months of this year, 4957 deaths were registered in Latvia, which is an increase of 9.2%, or 419 more than in the same period last year, when 4538 deaths were registered.

Thus, in the first two months of this year, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 3196, whereas a year earlier it was by 2767.

In the first two months of 2026, 742 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is a decrease of 20.5%, or 191 marriages less compared to the same period in 2025.

As of March 1 of this year, the preliminary population of Latvia was 1.818 million people.
