In southern Russia, around 100 cases of giant tick bites have already been recorded this year, with these ticks migrating from Africa and Asia on birds. Could they appear in Latvia as well?
- The ticks of the genus Hyalomma prefer hot, dry steppes. In Russia, they can indeed be found in the Astrakhan, Rostov, and Volgograd regions, as well as in the Stavropol and Krasnodar territories.
However, the Latvian climate is still unsuitable for them. Individual specimens may arrive in the country with migratory birds, but they are unable to establish a sustainable population,” assured entomologist Natalia Lyutskо.
Hyalomma ticks are significantly larger than our ticks. They actively attack and also carry dangerous diseases such as Congo-Crimean hemorrhagic fever, Siberian tick typhus, and Q fever.
