One of the masters of Latvian photojournalism, Boris Kolesnikov, has passed away.
He was born in 1946 in Jekabpils into an old and respected family of Old Believers, the Kolesnikovs. In 1962, he graduated from Balvi Secondary School, later studying at the Riga Construction Technical School and also at the University of Latvia.
He began his career in photojournalism in 1974 as a photo correspondent for the news agency "Latinform." Later, he interned at the Moscow bureau of the Associated Press.
Boris Kolesnikov's photographs were published in Latvian and Russian newspapers in the Latvian SSR and the Republic of Latvia, including the currently popular newspaper "SEGDONYA."
Since 1991, he worked at the LETA agency, then at the photo agency AFI. From 2005 to 2013, he was the chief photo editor of the newspaper "Latvijas Vēstnesis," and since 2013, he has been a photo correspondent for the magazine "Jurista Vārds."
His works were published in many print and digital publications dedicated to the history of Latvia, including the National Encyclopedia, as well as books.
Boris's works were exhibited at numerous exhibitions and evaluated in Latvian and international photo competitions, including World Press Photo in the Netherlands (1978, 1980), the "Amber Land" exhibition in Riga (1979), "Sails of Tallinn" in Tallinn (1979), "7. Bifota" in Berlin (1979), and others. In 1981 and 1996, he held solo exhibitions in Riga.
In 2016, for his services to the Latvian state, he was awarded the Order of the Three Stars (IV class).
