Municipalities provide assistance in paying medical bills for their residents facing financial difficulties.

According to data collected by the Central Statistical Bureau, local authorities allocated a total of €784,291 in benefits for healthcare-related expenses to residents of Latvia in the first two months of this year.

In January, municipalities paid benefits for healthcare-related expenses to 6,692 individuals, and in February to 6,693 individuals.

The medical benefit is one type of social assistance that is additionally provided by local government and is funded from local budgets.

The healthcare benefit is most often determined by local authorities for elderly individuals and persons with disabilities, who are deemed to meet the criteria for being in need or part of a low-income household.

At the same time, there are municipalities that allocate benefits for the purchase of glasses, most often for children from poor and low-income families.

In turn, several municipalities have provided benefits for dental services, prosthetics, medical services, and examinations for vulnerable populations.
