The Exam System in Latvia - Bulky and Complex

The session of state exams in basic and high school is just around the corner, writes Diena.

This year, ninth graders will have to take only two centralized exams - in Latvian language and mathematics - and score at least 15%. Knowledge of a foreign language will be assessed in the format of a monitoring work. For the first time, graduates of basic school will also have a diagnostic work in natural sciences.

In high school, it is necessary to pass at least four centralized exams - in Latvian language, mathematics, foreign language, and natural sciences. One of them, at the student's discretion, can be at a higher level. The passing threshold for exams is no lower than 20%.

The first state verification work - monitoring work in foreign language for ninth graders - will take place from April 22 to 24, and the session of centralized exams for ninth graders will begin on May 19 with the exam in Latvian language. The mathematics exam is scheduled for May 26, and the diagnostic work in natural sciences will take place on April 28. A total of 17,344 students have registered for the mathematics exam, 17,221 for the Latvian language exam. 16,926 ninth graders plan to take the foreign language exam.

For high school students, the exam marathon will begin on May 11 with social sciences and will end on June 12 with geography. High school students will take foreign language exams from May 25 to 28, mathematics on June 1, and Latvian from June 3 to 5. In previous years, high school students had to write monitoring work in natural sciences, but this year they will take exams in chemistry, physics, or biology - on May 18, 20, and 22, respectively. The Latvian language exam will be taken by 16,476 students, the English language exam by 15,540, the physics exam by 2,406, the chemistry exam by 2,045, the biology exam by 5,446, and the natural sciences exam by 2,320.

The issuance of certificates of completion of basic school is scheduled for June 26, and certificates of completion of high school for July 3. As reminded by the head of the exam department of the State Education Development Agency, Kaspars Špule, to obtain a certificate of completion of basic school, a ninth-grade graduate must have annual grades in all subjects, and only in one of them can the grade be below four points. The head of the State Education Development Agency, Inga Ozola, acknowledged that the exam system in Latvia is very complex.
