I read the information that our Ministry of Internal Affairs purchased vehicles equipped with photo radars using budget funds, which will be used in problematic areas of roads and streets to enhance safety and prevent accidents.
I assume that mobile photo radars have been handed over to a private company, whose main goal is profit rather than concern for reducing the number of accidents.
This month, I saw how mobile photo radars are actually used. There is a street called Chuguna in Riga. For about 500 meters up to Gaviezes Street, it is used by drivers to exit the Zolitude and Imanta neighborhoods onto the Jurmala highway. On one side of this part of the street runs a railway, and on the other, near Zolitudes Street, there is a private property. Further on, there are overgrown wastelands and abandoned gardens. Recently, this empty section of the street was designated as a residential area, with a corresponding sign placed at the intersection with Zolitudes Street.
I have lived in the Zolitude area since 1986 and have constantly used this part of Chuguna Street, and I have never (!) seen or heard of any accidents on this street. However, it is this part of the street that has been favored by the photo radar car after the installation of the "Residential Area" sign. I believe its "catch" is enormous.
Can we request a comment from the leadership of the State Police and its structure responsible for road safety regarding the use of the photo radar on a quiet, practically empty safe street, instead of monitoring speed on truly important and dangerous sections of roads with genuinely heavy traffic?
Also (this is already a question for the city authorities), I would like to know the reasons for converting the empty part of Chuguna Street into a residential area, although no new buildings have appeared here in the last 40 years.
I would like to add that along this street, there are private houses on both sides, but paradoxically, this is no longer considered a residential area — in any case, the action of the corresponding sign does not extend to that place. Reader bb.lv.
