Rural Youth More Often Drop Out of Education and Employment

In Latvia, the share of young people aged 18 to 24 who have dropped out of education in rural areas is almost twice as high as in cities, according to data from the Central Statistical Bureau's labor force survey, reports LETA.

In 2025, 7.1% of youth in cities interrupted their education, while in rural areas, the figure was 12.5%.

Statistics show that dropout rates are more common among young men, especially in rural areas, while young women drop out less frequently both in cities and in rural areas.

In cities, 8.7% of men and 5.5% of women discontinued their education. In rural areas, the figures were 18% for men and 6.6% for women.

In rural territories, there is also a higher proportion of youth who are neither studying nor working. In 2025, 8.6% of young people aged 15 to 24 in cities were neither employed nor engaged in education. In rural areas, this figure reached 10.4%.

In the age group of 25 to 29, the share of such young people is even higher. In cities, it reached 14.5%, while in rural areas, it was 17.6%.
