At the beginning of this year, the most common male name in Latvia remains Janis; however, its popularity has decreased by 12.6% over the past six and a half years, according to data from the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.
As of January 1 of this year, there were 43,623 Janis registered in Latvia, while on July 1, 2019, their number was 49,941.
The number of bearers of other common male names is also decreasing. For instance, as of January 1 of this year, there were 31,483 Alexanders living in Latvia, compared to 34,678 on July 1, 2019.
The popularity of the name Sergey is also declining. For several years, it has held the third place among the most common male names; however, while there were 22,527 Sergeys in Latvia in mid-2019, by the beginning of this year, that number had dropped to 20,413.
At the same time, the top three most popular female names have changed somewhat over the past six and a half years. As of January 1 of this year, there were 20,304 Elena, 20,092 Tatiana, and 19,665 Anna registered in Latvia. In comparison, on July 1, 2019, the most common female name was Anna, with 21,970 bearers, followed by 21,879 Tatianas and 21,660 Elenas.
