Light snow in many areas of Latvia; air quality may deteriorate during the day

On Thursday morning, cloudy weather is observed in Latvia, with clearings in some places — mainly in Kurzeme — while light snow is falling over most of the country, meteorological information indicates, as reported by LETA.

The snow cover thickness at observation stations ranges from 7–9 centimeters in Kolka, Mersrags, Daugavgriva, Ainaži, and Rujiena to 51 centimeters in Silis of the Livonian region and 56 centimeters in Dagda. The largest increase in snow cover over the past 24 hours was recorded in Liepaja — from 22 to 28 centimeters.

The air temperature is mainly between -8 and -13 degrees, locally in Kurzeme down to -16 degrees. At night, -17 degrees was registered at Ventspils Airport.

A light wind and calm conditions persist, so air quality may deteriorate in cities; early in the morning it is good or moderate.

In Riga, it is cloudy with light snow, a weak southeast wind is blowing, and the air temperature is -8 to -9 degrees. The snow cover thickness at the observation station in the city center is 22 centimeters.

On Thursday, the sun will peek through the clouds

On Thursday, light snow is expected in many areas of Latvia, with the sun peeking through the clouds, meteorologists predict, as reported by LETA.

A light wind and calm conditions will continue, so air quality may deteriorate in cities.

The air temperature will rise to -2 to -7 degrees.

In Riga, light snow and sunshine are possible, with calm conditions changing to a light northwest wind, and the air temperature will be -5 to -6 degrees.

The weather conditions are determined by an area of low pressure. Atmospheric pressure is 1008–1011 hPa at sea level.

The maximum air temperature in Latvia on Wednesday was -5 to -9 degrees.

The highest air temperature in Europe on February 18 was +25 degrees in eastern Spain. The lowest air temperature on the night of Thursday was -35 to -37 degrees in northern Norway and Russia.
