When COVID and flu knock on the window: more than 10 patients died in Latvia in a week

Since the beginning of the season, 22 reports of deaths of patients with confirmed influenza have been received, the Center for Disease Prevention and Control reported. Data on those who died with coronavirus are not disclosed.

Laboratory surveillance data indicate that the circulation of the influenza virus in Latvia remains at a high level. Cases of influenza have been registered in all monitoring areas except for the Valmiera region.

The highest intensity of influenza is still observed in Jelgava (2,248.3 per 100,000 residents) and Rezekne (578.6 per 100,000 residents). Higher morbidity was observed among children under 14 years old, with an increase noted last week in the age group of 0–4 years.

Last week, eight reports of deaths of patients with confirmed influenza infection were received. Since the beginning of the season, a total of 22 reports of deaths of patients with confirmed influenza have been received.

The proportion of positive tests for COVID-19 last week was 5.1%. Thirty-five patients with COVID-19 were admitted to hospitals, with a total of 77 patients being treated in inpatient care.

Three cases of death of patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection were registered in the past week.

Given the simultaneous circulation of influenza, COVID-19, and other respiratory infections, the Center for Disease Prevention and Control urges residents to adhere to preventive measures — regularly wash hands, ventilate rooms, avoid crowded places, and use medical masks or respirators if necessary.

In case of illness, it is necessary to stay at home, contact a family doctor, and follow their instructions to reduce the spread of infections.
