At a time when almost everyone has a smartphone in their pocket that can tell the exact time, Riga still has numerous public clocks available. However, not all of them are working, reports the Bez Tabu program (TV3).
"Good morning! Can we find out why the clock at the Furniture House shows the correct time only twice a day? This has been going on for several years. It's strange that the clock is illuminated, but the mechanism is not working. Thank you!" - wrote a viewer of the show, Airita, to TV3.
The journalists of "Bez Tabu" went to take a look at the clock at the Furniture House. It was one and a half hours behind the actual time. Meanwhile, other clocks in the city were accurate. Returning to the starting point after a few hours, the film crew confirmed that the hands of the clock at the Furniture House had not changed their position.
If there are doubts that the clock on a mobile device or wristwatch shows inaccurate time, this can be checked on the websites time.is.lv or pareizslaiks.lv. The owner is aware that the clock in Purvciems has "stuck" at noon.
"The clock on the private territory of the Furniture House has been installed for a long time; over many years of operation, the mechanisms of the control equipment have worn out, and repair is needed to restore functionality. Unfortunately, spare parts for such control mechanisms are no longer available. We are looking for options for a complete replacement of the control system that is technically and electrically compatible with the installed designer dials," they explained there.
The Furniture House takes care of the clock, but there are also 44 public clocks in the capital — they are managed by the Riga City Council. The number of clocks in the city remains constant, and there are no plans to increase or decrease it. Their maintenance is a significant task, notes the municipal representative. However, if there are suspicions about the accuracy of the time, one will have to remember the year Riga was founded, as to contact the municipality now you need to call 1201.
