On Friday and Saturday night, a blizzard will hit Latvia, which may become the strongest this winter in some regions of the country, forecasters predict.

Early in the morning on Friday, a vast area of precipitation with moderate to heavy snow and blizzards will begin to cross Latvia from the southwest, while rain and freezing rain are expected at times in the southeastern part of the country.

Most of the country is expected to receive 10–25 centimeters of fresh snow, with less snow in the northwest - in Ventspils and Kolka, as well as in Salacgrīva and Rūjiena. Gusts of east-northeast wind will reach 11–16 meters per second, and up to 20 meters per second on the Kurzeme coast of the Gulf of Riga.

In the capital, light snow will begin on Friday morning and will intensify throughout the day, gradually weakening overnight into Saturday.

Heavy snow and snow drifts may make some roads impassable, and railway tracks may be blocked in places. The situation will begin to worsen in the second half of Friday.

On Saturday, the sky will clear. The wind will blow from the north and gradually weaken, but it will still be strong enough to blow snow in places - snowdrifts are expected.

On Sunday, it will be mostly sunny. In the morning on Sunday and during the night into Monday, temperatures may drop to around -30 degrees in some areas.

According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, the snow cover at observation points currently ranges from 6–8 centimeters in Kolka, Mērsrags, Daugavgrīva, Ainaži, and Rūjiena to 40 centimeters in Daugavpils, 45 centimeters in Piedruja, and 52 centimeters in Dagda.
