Amendments to the law restricting distance learning remain in the spotlight of both lawmakers and other stakeholders, writes Diena.
The President, returning them to the Saeima for reconsideration, expressed concern about the compressed timelines for the amendments to take effect - starting from September 1 of this year, the restrictions will affect first-grade students, and by 2029, the entire primary school.
The responsible committee of the Saeima supported the proposal to postpone this deadline by one year - from the 2027/2028 academic year, the restrictions will apply to first and fourth grades, a year later to second and fifth grades, and from September 1, 2029, to third and sixth grades. The changes provide for replacing remote learning with partial attendance at classes.
Distance and home learning will be allowed for one year for children who have received a conclusion from the local government. Special circumstances (social, medical, related to the accessibility of education, and others) will need to be established to justify why learning in this format is in the best interests of the child.
At a meeting of the Education, Culture and Science Committee, family doctor Arta Deninaya urged not to forget that the law should work for the benefit of children and to consider that there are many children in Latvia with psycho-emotional disorders who suffer from bullying at school, so it is understandable that they would not want to learn in an environment where they are subjected to violence. Therefore, other educational opportunities - distance or home learning - are suitable for them.
