Despite the expansion of state support for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) this year, the demand still significantly exceeds the available funding, notes the head of the Children's Hospital Foundation, Liene Dambinja.
According to the foundation, last year, state-funded psychosocial rehabilitation services were provided to 102 children with ASD across Latvia. This is supportive therapy that includes ABA therapy, sessions with a speech therapist, audiologist, and occupational therapist, which contributes to the development of children, strengthening their functional skills, and integration into society.
At the same time, the foundation continues to attract donations to provide therapy for those children who do not receive state-funded services. Thanks to state funding and donations, last year assistance was provided to over 400 children with ASD in total.
This year, a significant increase in state funding for psychosocial rehabilitation of children under seven years old is planned, which will allow for supportive therapy to be provided annually to approximately 200 children.
Also, for the first time this year, state funding for supportive therapy for seven-year-old children with ASD who will start school has been allocated. This year, the budget will be sufficient to support 27 children. This service is intended for children with a confirmed or possible diagnosis of ASD who have not previously received state-funded supportive therapy.
Applications for psychosocial rehabilitation services for children with ASD can be submitted to the Children's Hospital Foundation.
The foundation notes that state-funded supportive therapy for children with ASD in Latvia was introduced as a pilot project by the Ministry of Welfare in 2024. Based on the results and evaluation of the pilot project last year, the ministry signed an agreement with the Children's Hospital Foundation, delegating it to provide these services to children aged two to seven after confirming the diagnosis of ASD or in case of suspicion of it.
