It is necessary to discuss changing the profiles of hospitals, and this is especially relevant in obstetrics, as the number of births in Latvia is decreasing, representatives of the Ministry of Health and the Balvi and Gulbene Hospital Association stated at a meeting on Wednesday.

During the meeting, medical issues in the border area were discussed. Balvi Hospital operates near the eastern border of Latvia - in a region of significant strategic importance, and therefore its operations are also assessed individually, the ministry reported.

The hospital and the ministry agreed that changes in obstetric services should be planned thoughtfully, evaluating the quality of services, the needs of the local population, ensuring a stable flow of patients and logistics.

It is also important to find a balance between attracting and retaining specialists and the ability to provide them with economically viable and sustainable work in a regional medical institution, the parties emphasized.

The merger of Balvi and Gulbene hospitals creates a level 3 hospital with 78 inpatient beds. The mandatory profiles for level 3 hospitals include therapy, patient care, surgery, gynecology, obstetrics, and pediatrics.

In addition to the mandatory profiles, the hospital also provides services for chronic disease management and neurological treatment.
