In the second half of this week, the snow cover in Latgale may increase by 20 centimeters, exceeding half a meter in many places, according to the latest weather forecasts, reports LETA.
In the middle of the week, light snow is expected in many areas of Latvia, with the most intense snowfall occurring in Latgale and Selia, where the snow cover may increase by 7–10 centimeters in some places. More significant precipitation and blizzards are possible on Friday and into Saturday night, with the highest amounts of precipitation forecasted for the southern and eastern parts of the country. In some areas in the south, mainly the southeast, freezing rain may also occur briefly.
According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LEGMC), currently, most of the country is covered by a snow layer of 10–25 centimeters, with more snow in Latgale—averaging 30–40 centimeters, and in Dagda, it reaches 45 centimeters.
If the precipitation forecasts are accurate, by the end of the week, the snow cover in most of Latvia may exceed 30 centimeters, and in many places in Latgale, it may reach 50–65 centimeters.
A large amount of precipitation is also expected in the Daugava basin in Belarus and Russia, where the snow depth is already 40–50 centimeters, so this spring, the Daugava may experience the largest flood in recent years.
According to the current forecast from the Global Forecast System, frosts in Latvia are expected to weaken in the coming days, but at the beginning of next week, air temperatures may again drop to -25 degrees in some areas.
As of 8:00 AM on February 10, the air temperature in the LEGMC observation network ranged from -6 degrees in Kolka to -30 degrees at the meteorological station in Daugavpils.
