The clouds that covered the sky on Wednesday morning in many areas of Latvia will disperse during the day over most of the country, meteorologists predict, writes LETA.

Significant precipitation is not expected. In some places in Latgale and Vidzeme, frost and poor air quality will persist.

A weak eastern wind will blow, with gusts up to 12 meters per second in southern Kurzeme.

During the day, temperatures are expected to range from -7 to -14 degrees.

In Riga, predominantly sunny weather is expected, with a weak eastern and southeastern wind, and the air temperature will rise to -9 degrees.

The weather is influenced by an anticyclone, while the influence of a low-pressure area is strengthening in Central Europe. Atmospheric pressure in Latvia is 1025–1029 hPa at sea level and is beginning to decrease.

The darkest quarter of the year is coming to an end

On Wednesday, the darkest quarter of the year, or the so-called solar winter, comes to an end in the Northern Hemisphere, according to data available on timeanddate.com, writes LETA.

Since the winter solstice, the length of the day in Latvia has increased by two hours.

On December 21 of last year, the sun rose in Riga at 9:00 AM and set at 3:43 PM, with the length of the day being six hours and 43 and a half minutes.

On February 4, the sun will rise in Riga at 8:16 AM and set at 4:59 PM, with the length of the day being eight hours and almost 43 minutes.

Each subsequent day will be longer by four to five minutes. Starting from March 18, the day will become longer than the night. Astronomical spring will begin on March 20.

February 5 will be the first day of solar spring. The three brightest months of the year, or solar summer, will be from May 7 to August 5.

Meteorological spring will begin when the average daily temperature exceeds zero for at least five consecutive days.
