The forecast for the week is alarming - snow - up to 20 cm, frost - down to -25 degrees

In the first half of this week, some areas in southern Latvia may receive 15-20 centimeters of fresh snow, meteorologists predict.

The heaviest snowfall is expected in southern Latgale and Zemgale on the border with Lithuania. The least precipitation this week will fall in northern Kurzeme and Vidzeme. On Monday and Tuesday, freezing rain and ice are possible in some areas. Light snow is expected in certain regions.

An east-northeast wind will blow, ranging from weak to moderately strong, with gusts on the Kurzeme coast of the Gulf of Riga occasionally reaching 14-16 meters per second.

Air temperatures in the first half of the week will range from -3 to -12 degrees, with northern Vidzeme experiencing temperatures as low as -16 degrees. In the second half of the week, it will get colder again. Starting from January 30, temperatures in some areas may drop to -20 to -25 degrees, with the strongest frosts expected in the eastern regions.

According to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, this week in Latvia may be 6-8 degrees colder than normal. The average air temperature in February is also forecasted to be several degrees below usual.

This January in Latvia is likely to become the coldest month since February 2012 and the coldest January since 2010.
