In the past year, 201 forest fires occurred in Latvia, with a total area of fires amounting to 73.1 hectares, according to data from the State Forest Service.
In most cases - 99 - the causes of the fires could not be established. The area of such fires amounted to 28.4 hectares.
In 47 cases, forest fires occurred due to careless handling of fire, resulting in the burning of 22 hectares of forest.
27 forest fires were related to human economic activities, including the burning of last year's grass, remnants after logging, and the impact of mechanized vehicles. The area of such fires amounted to 17.5 hectares.
In 17 cases, arson was recorded, resulting in the burning of 3.2 hectares of forest. Another 11 fires were related to other causes.
The majority, or 151 fires, occurred in state forests.
