The duration of sunlight in Latvia since the winter solstice — December 21 — has increased by about an hour, according to data available on the website timeanddate.com, reports LETA.

On December 21 of last year, the sun rose in Riga at nine in the morning, and sunset occurred at 15:43 — the length of the day was six hours and 43 and a half minutes.

On January 20, the sun in Riga rises at 8:43 and sets at 16:26, making the length of the day seven hours and almost 43 minutes.

Each subsequent day will be longer by three to four minutes, with the most rapid increase — almost five minutes a day — occurring in March.

Starting from March 18, the day will become longer than the night. Astronomical spring will begin on March 20.

Meanwhile, solar spring will start on February 5, as the darkest quarter of the year comes to an end. The brightest three months of the year, or solar summer, will last from May 7 to August 5.
