On Tuesday night and in the morning, temperatures across Latvia are expected to drop to -20...-24 degrees, meteorologists predict.
In most parts of the country, thermometers will drop below -15 degrees, while along the coast, temperatures will fluctuate around -10 degrees. No precipitation is expected, but fog and hoarfrost may form in some areas. A weak southern wind will blow, and calm weather is also anticipated.
From Monday evening until Tuesday morning, a yellow warning for severe frost will be in effect in the eastern part of the country, as announced by the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center.
During the day, the sun will shine, although cloudy weather without precipitation is expected in some areas of Kurzeme and northwestern Vidzeme. With a weak wind and calm conditions, the air temperature in the middle of the day will fluctuate between -4 and -14 degrees.
Due to the frost and calm conditions, air quality will deteriorate in some places, especially in cities.
A sunny Tuesday is expected in Riga, with a weak southern wind. The air temperature in the city center will be -13 degrees in the morning and up to -21 degrees in the suburbs; during the day, it is expected to be around -10 degrees.
In cases where the air temperature drops below -20 degrees, younger schoolchildren may not attend educational institutions.
According to the Cabinet of Ministers' regulations, cold limits have been set for educational institutions, at which point schoolchildren may stay home. Children under the age of 12 may not attend educational institutions if the air temperature drops below -20 degrees, while students aged 13 and older may not go to school if the temperature drops to at least -25 degrees.
