Forecasters' Correction: Warm Air Masses Likely Won't Reach Latvia

The week that has begun in Latvia is likely to be the coldest since January 2024, according to forecasts from the Global Forecast System.

Occasional clearings and light precipitation are expected; more snow will fall on the night of Thursday in Kurzeme and Zemgale. On Tuesday, calm weather is mainly expected, with a southeast wind from light to moderate in the following days.

In clear weather, temperatures in some areas - predominantly in the eastern regions - may drop below -20 degrees. In most parts of the country, nighttime and daytime temperatures are expected to range from -5 to -15 degrees.

In the middle of the week, warmer air masses are expected to approach Latvia from the west, but they will likely not reach Latvia, as reported in the previous forecast. Additionally, at the end of this week and into next week, a high-pressure system may strengthen in the northeastern part of Europe, which could bring stronger frosts.

According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, last winter, the air temperature in the country did not drop below -20 degrees at any point, while in the winter of 2023-2024, the lowest temperature (-29.5 degrees) was recorded on January 8 at the Daugavpils observation station. In previous years, the harshest frost was recorded on January 17, 2021, in Stalgene, reaching -31 degrees.
