There is unrest in Latvian theaters. Under pressure from the Ministry of Culture, funding cuts are taking place in several Riga theaters, including the 'Dailes' theater. As a result, the legendary actress Mirza Martinson and others have become victims of the cuts.
As reported by the theater director Juris Zhagars, a reduction in the state subsidy amounting to 276,205 euros is planned. In addition to savings on decorations and a decrease in the number of new productions, staff reductions were necessary.
In particular, some technical staff and even cleaners were laid off. Also, two legends of the theater - Mirza Martinson and Olga Drege - have been removed from the staff.
Mirza is 74 years old and has served at 'Dailes' for over half a century. Olga Drege is 86 years old, having been in the theater for more than six decades, but she is in excellent shape, having played a small role in the play with Chulpan Khamatova 'Lead Your Plow Over the Dead'. In turn, Martinson also had roles.
Mirza is known for her star role in the film 'Mirage', while Olga is recognized for her roles in the Latvian film classics 'The Devil's Servants at the Devil's Mill' and 'Limousine of the Color of the White Night'.
And as it became known, both stars accepted the fact of being removed from the staff calmly, but still hope for some roles on a freelance basis.
