Friday will be the coldest day so far this winter in Latvia, with gusty winds and snowdrifts expected, forecasters predict.

At night in Latgale and on the Kurzeme coast of the Gulf of Riga, gusts of northeast wind will reach 16 meters per second. During the day, gusts of wind up to 13-18 meters per second are expected across the country, and up to 22 meters per second on the northern Kurzeme coast.

The strongest snowdrifts will occur in Latgale and Selia, as well as in places in Vidzeme and Kurzeme. Snowdrifts will form on the roads. No precipitation is expected, with snow only passing through southern Latgale in the afternoon.

The sky will be overcast. The air temperature at night and in the morning will drop to -9...-14 degrees, and in northern Kurzeme to -5...-8 degrees. During the day, the thermometer will rise by 1-3 degrees. Due to the wind, the frost will be felt more intensely.

On Friday, it will be cloudy in Riga, with no precipitation. The northeast wind will be gusty during the day, up to 14 meters per second. The air temperature will be -8...-10 degrees.
