Over the past ten years, the birth rate in Daugavpils has experienced a sharp decline — the total number of newborns has decreased by almost 45%, the city council reported to the LETA agency.
In 2025, 432 children were born in Daugavpils — 58 fewer than in 2024, according to aggregated data from the Daugavpils City Council's Civil Registry Department.
For comparison, in 2016, 778 children were born in the city, and in 2017, the maximum figure of the decade was reached — 796 newborns. Since then, birth rates have steadily declined: in 2018, 674 children were registered, in 2019 — 662, and in 2020 — 627.
The decline continued in the following five years. In 2021, 612 children were born in Daugavpils, in 2022 — 543, in 2023 — 485, and in 2024 — 490.
The city continues to experience negative natural growth, as the mortality rate significantly exceeds the birth rate. In 2025, 810 deaths were registered in Daugavpils.
Although there has been a trend towards decreasing mortality in recent years, it still nearly doubles the birth rate. In 2021, 1,290 people died in the city, in 2022 — 1,114, in 2023 — 901, and in 2024 — 801 people.
The local government indicates that the decline in birth rates in Daugavpils is influenced by both the overall aging of the population and the decrease in the number of residents of reproductive age, which is related to demographic processes and migration from previous decades.
