Latvian State Agency Advises Pensioners to Sort Out Their Pensions by January 31 0 9

If the application is NOT submitted, the increase in the pension – funded by the tax contributions of the working pensioner – will occur from April 1, 2026. This may NOT be beneficial.

Consider "G": the increase depends on the birthday

Choosing a different month for the pension recalculation is advisable so that it falls after the senior's next birthday – this directly affects the amount of the pension increase.

As is known, the pension calculation formula (and its increase) uses the G indicator (projected life expectancy of the pensioner, or the so-called "age of survival"), which depends on the number of full years a person has lived. The older the senior is, the greater the increase. This should be taken into account when choosing the recalculation month.

Can the specified date for the pension recalculation be changed? Yes, but no later than two months before the date of the next automatic recalculation.

How and Where to Submit the Application

To choose a different month for the automatic pension recalculation, an application must be submitted to the GASS BY JANUARY 31, 2026. The application form can be found on the portal vsaa.gov.lv in the section – "Application for Changing the Date of Automatic Pension Recalculation" / Iesniegums automātiskā pensijas pārrēķina datuma maiņai.

In the following years, GASS will automatically recalculate the pension from the first day of the month chosen by the pensioner.

How to Submit the Application:

• electronically, by signing it with an electronic signature and sending it to the GASS email address;

• in person at any GASS customer service center;

• by mail, sending it to any GASS office.

At the same time, GASS clarifies: to change the month of automatic pension recalculation after April 1, 2026, it is NOT possible to use the electronic application "Pension Recalculation for Old Age" (Vecuma pensijas pārrēķināšanai). It is necessary to use the "Application for Changing the Date of Automatic Pension Recalculation" (Iesniegums automātiskā pensijas pārrēķina datuma maiņai).

Who Will Automatically Receive the Increase

The automatic pension recalculation will apply to recipients of old-age pensions, disability pensions of groups 1 and 2, and pensions for length of service (excluding pensions for length of service in institutions) who continued to work after the pension was granted or after the previous recalculation and:

• at least 12 months have passed since the pension was granted or the previous recalculation;

• social security contributions have been made for at least one month during this period.

When automatically recalculating pensions, GASS will take into account the information received from the State Revenue Service (SRS) about the social security contributions of the person at the time of recalculation.

Self-Employed Individuals: Reporting Nuances

If the senior is registered as a self-employed individual, social security contributions are paid quarterly.

For example, a recipient of an old-age pension who is registered with the SRS as a self-employed taxpayer and pays social security contributions quarterly will have their pension automatically recalculated from April 1, 2026.

However, at that time, GASS will not yet have information about contributions for the previous quarter – January, February, and March. Therefore, the recalculation will be made without the last three months.

What Else is Important

For recipients of disability pensions, the recalculation of pensions made due to a change in the disability group is NOT taken into account.

For example: a person has a disability pension of group 3 since September 18, 2021. On January 10, 2026, due to a change in the disability group from 3 to 2, the pension is recalculated taking into account the social security contributions for the period from September 2021 to December 2025. From April 1, 2026, the pension will also be automatically recalculated by GASS taking into account the insurance contributions from January to March 2026.

This year and until March 31 of the following year, the existing procedure for pension recalculation will remain in effect, which GASS performs based on the submitted application no earlier than 12 months after the previous recalculation.
