On the morning of the first working day of the new year, due to snow and ice, driving conditions on state highways and regional roads are difficult in many places in Latvia, with the most challenging conditions in the Saldus area, according to the summarized information from the State Joint Stock Company Latvijas valsts ceļi (Latvian State Roads), LETA reports.
In Kurzeme, driving conditions are particularly difficult on the section of the Liepaja highway from Mazblidene to Ciecere, as well as on regional and local roads in the vicinity of Saldus. Difficulties are also observed on the Liepaja — Lithuania border road (Rucava), on regional and local roads around Liepaja, Ventspils, and Talsi, as well as on local roads in the Tukums area.
In Zemgale, driving conditions on state highways are generally satisfactory, but they are complicated on regional roads around Bauska, Dobele, and Tukums.
In the Riga and Vidzeme regions, as of 6:50 AM, it is slippery on the Vidzeme highway from Berģi to Augšlīgatne, as well as on the Valmiera highway from Murjani to the bridge over Brasla.
In the eastern part of Latvia, icing is observed on most sections of state highways, including the Daugavpils highway and several major roads in the areas of Aizkraukle, Jekabpils, Daugavpils, Rezekne, Balvi, Preili, and Kraslava.
On Monday morning, 85 units of winter road equipment were involved in clearing and salting snowy and slippery sections of the roads, Latvijas valsts ceļi reported.
