Immediately after the Christmas warmth, ten-degree frosts will 'hit' Latvia.
Latvia is facing a prolonged cold snap. According to the latest forecasts from meteorologists, the temperature regime in the coming weeks will be extremely unstable: from abnormal thaws to severe January frosts.
The country will greet Christmas with slight minus temperatures, but immediately after the holiday, the weather will take a sharp turn. Warmth will return to Latvia - thermometer readings will rise to +2…+7 degrees. The western wind will shift to the north and strengthen slightly, while significant precipitation is not expected, and the sky will remain mostly overcast.
The turning point will come in the last two days of the outgoing year, when arctic air masses will begin to break through from the north. On New Year's Eve, frosts will cover the entire territory of the country, and festive landscapes in many regions will be complemented by a snow cover.
Real cold will hit in early January: temperatures may drop below -10 degrees. According to calculations from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, the average temperature for the first month of 2026 will be around -5 degrees, which is two degrees below the climatic norm. If meteorologists' calculations prove accurate, the upcoming January will be the coldest since 2024, when the average across the country was -5.2 degrees.
