Shortly before Christmas, Latvia is expected to experience the strongest cold snap of the current season; however, during the holidays, the air temperature will rise above zero, according to fresh weather forecasts, reports LETA.
The most significant drop in temperature is expected on Tuesday, December 23, when in the morning the air temperature will drop to 0..–5 degrees in Kurzeme and to –5..–10 degrees in the rest of the country. It will not become significantly warmer during the day. Snow is expected in several areas at night, and during the day it will mostly be sunny.
On Christmas Eve, cloud cover will increase, and light precipitation is possible in some places — mainly snow in Vidzeme. Frost will persist, but along part of the coast, the air temperature will rise above zero as the wind shifts to the west. There will be little snow, and a snow cover is not expected in most parts of the country.
On the first day of Christmas, with the strengthening of the western wind and increasing cloudiness, the air temperature will rise above zero in almost all of Latvia. By the night of December 26, it will warm up to +2..+7 degrees. There will be little precipitation.
At the end of the week, occasional precipitation is expected, and the sun will shine at times, with a slight decrease in air temperature. Similar weather conditions are forecasted for New Year's.
According to data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, January is generally expected to be cold — the average air temperature for the month may be below the norm of –3 degrees.
