At an extraordinary meeting of the Riga City Council, concerns about the safety of Riga residents were raised. The power vacuum was discussed using the example of the Riga district of Vecmilgravis – an old, working peninsula that has been neglected by law enforcement for several years.
Deputy Arturs Klebahs voiced a collective appeal from the public – the nearest site in Sarkandaugava, and if something happens, they won't have time.
– Thank you to all the residents for their activism, – said Vice Mayor Ratnieks, who took on the responsibility for safety in the capital. However, the second in command of Riga explained that a municipal police water center is already being prepared in Vecmilgravis. We just have to wait… a couple of years.
– We have seen many episodes indicating that residents are not safe. One teenager, who was being chased by a group of his peers, sought refuge in our tent where we were collecting signatures.
"On the street (a specific name followed here. – note by N.K.) there is a place where drug addicts localize, where drug users come not only from their area but from other parts of Riga as well," stated opposition deputy Lyubov Shvetsova with interesting information.
In response, it seemed logical to your author to point out to the retired Colonel of the Financial Police that it is unreasonable to advertise the 'spots' for acquiring prohibited substances in this way. And in general, to stigmatize Vecmilgravis.
After all, the area is no worse than others, and to make residents feel even safer, it would be enough to have a couple of municipal police crews on rotation around the clock. Just as the law enforcement officers have been doing near the Ukrainian embassy for almost 4 years now.
However, in fact, the Center of Riga is the most criminal zone in the capital. Because this is where all the government institutions are located that carry out the infamous 'white-collar' crime…
