In Rezekne, there are fears that the Gors concert hall will become "more Russian"

The Rezekne City Council ordered an audit to assess the performance of the eastern Latvian concert hall "Gors". The municipality is considering possible scenarios for reorganizing the concert hall.

Opposition deputies of the council are concerned that the concert hall may end up in the hands of a private entrepreneur, which would lead to a decrease in the level of cultural offerings and quality. Residents of Rezekne actively participated in the process - an initiative appeared on the platform "manabalss.lv" that was signed by more than 2,500 people in 24 hours.

"At the moment, the working group has not adopted or prepared any decision for the municipal leadership," said Ivetta Cipruse, the deputy executive director of the municipality. She stated that an audit was needed earlier, but it was appointed now because the municipality can afford it.

During the election campaign in May, when Rezekne was led by a temporary administration and Alexander Bartashevich was removed from the position of mayor for violations, he expressed his dissatisfaction with the work of the concert hall in the election debates on Latvian television: "The repertoire is unsatisfactory. Especially considering that the city leadership changed a year ago."

Currently, the official rhetoric of the municipality, which refers to the audit, is that the repertoire should meet public interests. Does this mean that Bartashevich wants events at "Gors" to be not only cheaper but also more "Russian"? The opposition admits that this may be the case.

The Latvian Music Council emphasized that the concert hall has strategic significance, with significant state, European funds, and money from the Cultural Capital Fund invested and continuing to be invested in its activities. Therefore, no changes to the management model of "Gors" can be discussed without the involvement of the Latvian Music Council, which is responsible for the strategic development of the music sector in Latvia. The concert hall has currently distributed a questionnaire asking the public to evaluate its work.
