Birth Rate in Latvia Continues to Decline: Down 10% in Ten Months

In Latvia, 9,887 newborns were registered in the first ten months of this year — this is 10.1% or 1,108 fewer than in the same period of 2024, according to preliminary data published by the Central Statistical Bureau, reports LETA.

Among the registered newborns in the first ten months of 2025, there were 5,162 boys — 3.8% or 204 fewer than in the same period of 2024, and 4,725 girls — 16.1% or 904 fewer.

In October, 1,004 newborns were registered in Latvia — 1.6% or 16 fewer than in October 2024. This included 519 boys and 485 girls.

In the first ten months of this year, 21,325 deaths were registered in Latvia — 3.7% or 820 fewer than in the same period of 2024, when 22,145 deaths were recorded.

Thus, in the first ten months of this year, the number of deaths exceeded the number of newborns by 11,438, whereas in the same period last year, this gap was 11,150.

In the first ten months of 2025, 9,625 marriages were registered in Latvia, which is 7.3% or 658 more compared to the same period in 2024.

As of November 1 of this year, the preliminary population of Latvia was estimated at 1.826 million people.
