Scammers have devised a new way to extort money from trusting residents of Latvia - now they pose as couriers from private companies.

In the community "Kengarags" on Facebook, they warn:

"New money scam! Or maybe not new. I received a call from Omniva (private courier service - ed.), a registered letter from VSAA (State Social Insurance Agency - ed.) has arrived. The courier will deliver it, just provide personal data. I hung up. A smart thought comes afterwards. I should have asked - in whose name is the letter. I don’t think Omniva delivers registered letters, and VSAA will send letters through the post. Be vigilant," wrote Olga.

"Ha, I got the same offer, but when I switched to the state language during the conversation - they hung up immediately. I’m afraid that scammers will soon learn Latvian or hire people who know Latvian… it’s even interesting what they feel after a ‘successful’ deal," shared Liliana.

"Scammers have already learned to use intelligence and sometimes call and speak in Latvian. But you have to be able to hear it," warned Alex.

"VSAA sends letters by regular mail to the mailbox. People, do not fall for calls where you are asked to provide your personal code or send document data," wrote Anonymous.

"Today they called supposedly from Latvenergo, talking about a planned meter check, when I asked them to repeat what they wanted - I said I WON’T BE SCARED AND HUNG UP! And now I received an SMS supposedly from DPD, saying wait for the order, but first check the PIN code via the link... Deception upon deception! PEOPLE, BE CAREFUL!" wrote Maria.

"I also received a call. When I said, knowing it was a scam, that I would come and pick it up myself, they hung up," shared Galina.

"VSAA sends official letters to the email address that opens with an e-signature!!! A preliminary reminder comes to a regular email that there is personal information. This applies to all official letters. Be careful!" warned Valentina.
