Changes are being prepared in Latvia's healthcare system: paid medical services will only be available to citizens with a declared place of residence, stated National Alliance representative Janis Vitenbergs, emphasizing the need to review expenses on foreigners.
In the program "Preses klubs" on TV24, the deputy chairman of the Saeima's Economic Commission, Janis Vitenbergs, spoke about upcoming changes in the healthcare system. According to him, starting next year, the right to paid medical services will only be available to those who have a declared place of residence in Latvia.
Vitenbergs noted that the discussion has become particularly relevant due to the situation with Latvians who live and work abroad, pay taxes in other countries, but continue to come to Latvia for medical services. The state spends about three million euros a year on this. However, the politician believes that the problem should be viewed more broadly. He points out that the costs for medical care for Russian citizens residing in Latvia amount to over 30 million euros annually — ten times more.
"If I am asked who should be the priority, it is our people, even if they live abroad," emphasizes Vitenbergs.
He believes that maintaining access to medical services is one way to keep in touch with Latvians who have gone to work in other countries. According to him, this could increase the chances of their return to Latvia. At the same time, he has a sharp stance regarding Russian citizens. He notes that many of them have not confirmed their loyalty to Latvia, do not apply for citizenship, but continue to use the same medical services as Latvian citizens. Moreover, a significant portion of them, in Vitenbergs' opinion, votes for Vladimir Putin in elections in Russia.
"The state needs to consider what is more important for us: our people who come occasionally and cost three million, or Russian citizens whose medical expenses are ten times higher. I hope for bold decisions," the politician stated.
