The Latvian government found nearly 50 million euros for the Oncology Center

On Tuesday, the government approved the allocation of 48.3 million euros for the implementation of the second phase of the reconstruction of the inpatient building of the "Latvian Oncology Center" of the Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital (RECUH), the Ministry of Health reported.

The necessary funds will be provided through the redistribution of available EU structural funds financing from projects in other areas.

The allocated funds will allow the Riga Eastern Clinical University Hospital (RECUH) to sign a contract with a contractor for work that includes the renovation of the operating room, intensive care unit, and related infrastructure, as well as the reconstruction of the remaining departments in the second phase of construction.

At a press conference following the government meeting, Health Minister Hosam Abu Meri noted that next year the reconstruction of all premises of the Oncology Center will begin.

In his opinion, this is an important step for Latvia to keep up and meet the quality standards of the European Union. The EU's cancer plan emphasizes the need to strengthen infrastructure and reduce inequality in access to treatment.

Abu Meri is confident that every euro invested in oncology pays off — patients return to work faster, the burden of disability decreases, and the number of long-term and costly complications is reduced.

The Latvian Oncology Center provides comprehensive treatment for malignant tumors.

The reconstruction of the Oncology Center building is planned in two consecutive phases, ensuring gradual modernization of the infrastructure and improvement of treatment conditions.

The first phase includes the reconstruction of the operating room, intensive care unit, and related infrastructure, while the second phase involves the renovation of the remaining departments of the center.

The total planned cost of the first phase is 25,907,009 euros, while the estimated cost of the second phase is 48.35 million euros.

The total necessary budget for the complete reconstruction of the center, including equipment, amounts to 81.26 million euros, of which 69.19 million euros is allocated for construction work and related expenses — construction, author and construction supervision, design, and other costs.
