Every fifth patient with a stroke dies in hospitals in Latvia

Every year, an average of 7,000 patients with strokes are admitted to hospitals in Latvia, of which an average of every fifth dies, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC).

In the case of a stroke, every minute counts — the faster help is provided, the higher the chances of saving a person's life, preserving their health, and overall quality of life.

About two-thirds of residents in Latvia aged 45 to 65 would be able to recognize the signs of a stroke, according to a survey conducted as part of the campaign.

To timely recognize a stroke, one should ask the person to smile and assess whether there is any facial asymmetry, that is, whether the corner of the eye or mouth is drooping on one side.

Then ask them to raise and hold both arms in front of themselves, observing whether they can do this, and also ask them to say or repeat a simple sentence to ensure that their speech is not impaired.

If the person cannot perform any of these actions, it is necessary to call for emergency medical assistance by dialing 112 or 113. It should be noted that often residents of Latvia do not call for an ambulance because they fear a large bill for an 'unjustified call.'
