A third of residents of Latvia — 32% — believe that the fear of making a mistake and receiving a negative grade causes the most stress for children in school, the LETA agency was informed by the distance secondary school 'Blaumanis', citing a survey conducted by the research company Norstat Latvia.
The second most common cause of stress among children, according to the survey results, is social tension, such as a lack of friends — this was indicated by 19% of respondents.
In turn, 18% of those surveyed believe that the main source of stress is an excessive amount of homework, while 10% pointed to stress from public speaking in front of the class. Factors such as fatigue and lack of sleep, as well as a lack of time for rest, hobbies, and work, are mentioned less frequently — these reasons were cited by 8% and 4% of survey participants, respectively.
According to the survey data, another 9% of respondents indicated other reasons that cause stress for children in school. For example, aspects such as impractical approaches to learning, excessive amounts of information, bullying, and a lack of discipline in educational institutions were most frequently mentioned.
The survey was conducted in October 2025. More than 1,000 residents of Latvia aged 18 to 74 participated in it.
