U.S. President Donald Trump is destroying not only the east wing of the White House but also democracy in the U.S., said his predecessor Joe Biden, according to LETA citing DPA.
"I knew Trump would be destroying the country, but I have to admit, I had no idea it would be literal destruction," Biden said, as quoted by CNN from a Democratic Party event in Omaha, Nebraska.
The former president from the Democratic Party commented on his Republican successor's decision to demolish part of the White House, where Trump plans to build a ballroom. Trump had previously claimed that the plans for the new hall "would not affect the existing building."
"This is a great symbol of his presidency," Biden noted. "Trump has begun to destroy not only the house of the nation but also the constitution, the rule of law, our democracy," stated the 82-year-old former president.
Addressing Trump, Biden remarked that the current president has shamed the country with his behavior and placed the interests of wealthy individuals above those of ordinary Americans.
Commenting on the Democrats' victories in the gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, as well as the mayoral election in New York City that took place last Tuesday, Biden said it was "a ray of light in a very, very dark time." According to him, the American people sent Trump a clear message with their votes.
Since leaving the presidency in January, Biden has rarely appeared in public. He had planned to run against Trump, but after poor debate performances and pressure from the Democratic elite and others, he withdrew from the race. His place was taken by Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost to Trump.
In May, it became known that Biden has prostate cancer.
