So That Not a Drop Is Lost! The First 500 Water Meters Installed in Riga for Multi-Apartment Buildings

As part of the telemetry project initiated by Rīgas ūdens, 500 water meters in multi-apartment and private homes were equipped with remote reading devices in October, reported Sandris Vanzovich, senior project manager for communications at the company, to the LETA agency.

Work began in the Purvciems and Sarkandaugava districts, which will soon be joined by other areas.

As part of the first phase of the project commissioned by Rīgas ūdens, the company Sadales tīkls will equip nearly 700 water meters in Purvciems and about 350 in Sarkandaugava with such devices. These areas were chosen for expedited modernization due to their high concentration of multi-apartment buildings. Work has also begun in Ziepniekkalns, Vecmilgravis, Čiekurkalns, and Teika.

The procedure for residents of multi-apartment buildings to report readings to management companies remains unchanged for now, as telemetry solutions are being implemented only up to the input meters — that is, up to the boundary where the responsibility of Rīgas ūdens networks ends.

This means that the overall water consumption readings in the building will be read automatically, but the management of internal water supply networks and the readings of meters in apartments still remain the responsibility of the owners and managers themselves.

As previously reported, Rīgas ūdens will install remote reading devices for meters worth 2.6 million euros, the company's Communication Department reports.

A five-year contract has been signed with Sadales tīkls for equipping commercial meters with remote reading equipment.

The project involves the installation of devices on more than 22,000 commercial meters throughout Riga. Sadales tīkls won the corresponding tender, with the contract amounting to 2.585 million euros excluding VAT. As part of the project, input meters in multi-apartment buildings, as well as meters in private homes and other facilities, will be equipped with the equipment.

The audited revenue of Rīgas ūdens last year amounted to 76.336 million euros — 0.1% less than in 2023. Due to asset revaluation, the company ended the year with a loss of 18.275 million euros, in contrast to a profit in 2023, according to the published data of the company.

Rīgas ūdens provides water supply services in Riga and several suburban areas — Ādaži, Ropaži, Mārupe, and Ķekava, as well as wastewater collection and treatment services. The sole owner of the company is the Riga municipality.
