The oldest native of Latvia, Margarita Romane, has died at the age of 113

Margarita Anna Romane, a native of Riga, has died — likely the last Latvian woman who personally remembered the day of the proclamation of the Latvian Republic on November 18, 1918.

At that historic moment, she was only six years old. Her passing was announced on the social network X by lawyer Kristine Jarinovska.

Margarita Anna Romane, née Mejgail, (1912–2025), lived in Canada.

In February of this year, Global News aired an interview with Romane, who resided in Montreal and was considered the oldest resident of Canada.

In March, surrounded by family and friends, she celebrated her 113th birthday.

In the interview with Global News, Margarita spoke about her youth in Latvia, the Soviet occupation, years in exile, and life in Montreal, where she worked as an art teacher. The walls of her room in the nursing home are adorned with her own paintings and photographs from her youth spent in Latvia.
