There are concerns in society that there are Ukrainians who are unscrupulously exploiting their status, writes La.lv.
Karlis writes on social media platform "X": "It seems that many Russians from Ukraine have come to Latvia, even more than actual Ukrainians. It creates the impression that most of them do not even know the Ukrainian language and only speak Russian. And how can one 'flee from Russia' but come to Latvia and calmly listen to Russian music???"
Martins also expresses dissatisfaction with the behavior of Ukrainian refugees in Latvia. He notes that the country is full of people who, in his words, "shamelessly exploit their refugee status." Martins adds that most of them do not speak Latvian, and at best understand the language. He also offers a pessimistic forecast – the war will end, but these people will remain.
Another user shares his opinion: "Ukrainians, if there were any in the occupied part, are leaving for Poland, where the language is similar. Ukrainian Russians, for whom people die in the war, are coming to Latvia, where they have no language problems. After three years, some Latvians start to regret. Too late."
Janis expresses the opinion in the discussion that after the borders opened, mainly people of Russian nationality left Latvia, and the same happened in Donbas – when the situation became favorable, Russians fled from there. He notes that there is nothing surprising in such behavior because when a person is torn from their homeland, it is easier for them to move further away. Janis adds that the desire to continue speaking their language in such conditions is completely natural.
The question is whether those who call themselves Ukrainians are actually Ukrainians at all. At the same time, Russians who do not want to learn any language behave the same way all over the world.
