Experienced hunter Anton lives in a private house in Salaspils with his loyal hound Tori, near which there is a ditch — according to him, beavers have settled in it, as reported by the program "Bez Tabu" (TV3).
In the summer, Anton's basement was completely flooded — the man wonders why the ditch is not maintained and why the local government ignores the presence of beavers in the city. Anton has a farm in the Zaube municipality, where there are also a lot of beavers, and in his opinion, the only way to deal with the rodents is through hunting.
Hunter Karlis Dadeiks agrees that cleaning the ditch is necessary — to encourage beavers to seek a new habitat, an unfavorable environment must be created for them. The hunting process within the city limits is regulated by hunting law — accordingly, each municipality has the right to develop rules for the culling of game animals in its territory.
There was no representative from the Salaspils municipality willing to comment on the situation on camera, but in writing, they explained that the water crossing structure is under the jurisdiction of the municipality, while the ditch belongs to two owners.
"The municipality is aware of the mentioned location and the problematic situation. The last time the beaver dam was destroyed was on October 22; this year, a specialist has inspected this water crossing structure approximately 50 times. The specified location is within the city limits, where the hunting society is allowed to limit the beaver population using traps, but safety conditions must be assessed to ensure that the traps do not pose a threat to others. Representatives of the hunting society were last at this location yesterday, and traps were also set up yesterday evening," the council stated.
In 2024, 140 beaver dams were removed in the Salaspils municipality, and this year, up to October, 117.
