Thank You, System! - A Cry of Despair from a Former Latvian Teacher

On Liana Langa's Facebook page, a post by Einar Goldberg, 'a former Latvian language teacher at a former school for national minorities,' has been republished. It is not entirely clear what the person is protesting against, seemingly against some system, but it is clear that he is in despair.

“My strength is also gradually running out, and for that, thank you, system.

Thank you for allowing schools to breathe in two languages for so long, but to think only in one. Thank you for making the teacher a translator between two worlds – between 'educational material' and 'did you understand what I said?'.

Thank you for turning every lesson into a marathon of translation. Thank you for making teaching no longer a creative job, but an art of survival. Thank you for allowing the teacher to also be a translator, integrator, comforter, and sometimes a victim.

And one more thank you to you, people of the system, for the years in which it was convenient not to notice how the roots grow into a foreign language. Thank you, system, for allowing this order to take root so deeply that now it needs to be uprooted. Thank you, system. And strength and endurance to those who fight daily with the consequences.

Sincerely, a Latvian language teacher at a former school for national minorities.”
