Deputies of the National Union Arturs Butans and Jurgis Klotins submitted a proposal to amend the Electronic Media Law, according to which advertising on local television and radio channels should be only in the state language.
Exceptions may only apply to foreign media broadcasting in another language and retransmitted in Latvia.
Butans notes that local television and radio channels are an important part of Latvia's information space, so it is logical that bilingualism in the advertising market should also be abolished. "Advertising, like any other public communication in Latvia, should strengthen the position of the state language - this is also a matter of security," emphasized the deputy.
Advertising shapes the public environment and influences the language habits of the population, so the use of the state language in advertising should also be consistent, the party notes.
