In an interview on TV24’s program “Ziņu top,” Saeima Deputy Linda Liepina (LPV) stated that in the current geopolitical situation, there can be no objections to investing funds in defense. However, she has significant concerns about how this concept is understood.
“I have concerns that by defense we only mean weapons,” emphasized Liepina.
She reminded that Latvia faces two serious risks. The first is the eastern neighbor, which can be countered by arming and cooperating with NATO, neighboring countries, and the European Union. However, the second risk, according to the deputy, is the decline in Latvia's population.
What are we doing about this issue and are we investing in it? It’s not just about the childbirth allowance, but also about the well-being of families and long-term security, which is not limited to just weapons,” the politician explained.
Liepina emphasized that defense also includes education and many other areas, not just armament or discussions about mandatory service for women.
She also strongly opposed the rhetoric that votes against the budget of the government of Evika Silinsha should be seen as votes against the security of Latvia. “That’s complete nonsense,” added Liepina.
