The premiere at the Chekhov Theatre caused a stir.
In May, the Main Stage of the Chekhov Moscow Art Theatre will host the premiere of the play "Hamlet" directed by Andrei Goncharov. In the title role is Yura Borisov.
Director Andrei Goncharov is the author of the adaptation; he has proposed his version of the Shakespearean tragedy. For Goncharov, this is his fourth work at the Moscow Art Theatre, but his first on the main stage. His plays "Chrevо," "Distant Rainbow," and "Autumn" are performed in the theatre's smaller halls.
Due to the fact that our Oscar nominee is in the title role of "Hamlet," there is heightened interest in the performance. Tickets went on sale on March 16. On the very first day, all tickets for the four performances in May were sold out. Prices ranged from 4,500 to 35,000 rubles (50 to 400 euros). Half of the tickets were sold online, and half at the box office, with a limit of two tickets per person. Entry to the box office was controlled by wristbands. A similar practice once existed for ticket sales for the ballet "The Nutcracker" at the Bolshoi Theatre.
It is worth noting that in 2024, Yura Borisov played one of the leading roles in the film "Anora" directed by American filmmaker Sean Baker. The film received the "Palme d'Or" at the Cannes Film Festival. In December 2024, he won the award for "Best Supporting Actor" from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
On January 23, 2025, Borisov was nominated for an Oscar in the "Best Supporting Actor" category but did not win. In April 2025, he signed a contract with United Talent Agency (UTA) — one of Hollywood's largest talent agencies.
