Remember: any excessive or careless interference can cause irreparable harm to the tree, even leading to its death. It is critically important to properly seal the hole made after the collection is completed – this is not a whim, but a vital necessity! Choose only mature, strong, and absolutely healthy birches. The ideal candidate is a tree with a trunk diameter of at least 30 centimeters. Young birches are too fragile and may simply not survive such an ordeal. It is also extremely important to pay attention to the growing location. Categorically refuse to collect sap near roads, industrial sites, or in polluted areas, as the drink may absorb all harmful impurities.

How Much Nourishing Sap Can Be Taken Without Harming the Tree?

From one mighty tree, it is permitted to take no more than 2–3 liters of sap per day. Please, do not be greedy! Exceeding this modest norm will inevitably deplete the plant, depriving it of the strength to recover. Although throughout the season one birch can yield up to 50 liters of this wonderful drink, it is highly undesirable to return to the same tree every year. Give it a well-deserved rest so it can fully recover and strengthen!

How to Carefully Make a Hole for Collecting Birch Sap?

Approach this stage with maximum delicacy. Use a sharp drill or knife. Forget about the axe – it will inflict terrible, unhealable wounds on the tree! The recommended diameter of the hole is only 1–1.5 cm, and the depth is up to 5 cm. Position it about one meter above the ground, and if possible, choose the northern side of the trunk – there the sap flows more abundantly. Gently insert a special trough or thin tube into the prepared hole, through which the nourishing liquid will flow directly into your clean container. And remember the golden rule: one tree – one hole. Do not tempt fate!

How to Gently Close the Hole on the Birch After Collecting?

This seemingly simple final stage is unfortunately often ignored by many. Yet it is precisely this that determines whether the tree will survive and continue its life cycle! As soon as you finish collecting the sap, immediately remove the tube and be sure to close the hole. A wooden plug is perfect for this. After the plug is in place, treat the area with garden wax or a special mixture of clay and lime. These simple but extremely important actions will reliably protect the birch from possible infections and significantly speed up its recovery.
